Greenhouse by Joost

Pottering around Sydney’s Circular Quay you may have come across a colourful and quirky looking structure.

The unique creation you have stumbled upon is the “Greenhouse” designed by artist Joost Bakker.

Greenhouse is a temporary restaurant and bar that defines the term eco- friendly. It has been designed and built using recycled materials including broken down shipping containers and packing crates. Even the furniture, light fittings, glasses and staff uniforms are made from recycled or recycable materials.

If you thought that wasn’t genius enough, well believe it or not the water is collected on site, the waste is recycled, the herb’s and vege’s are grown on the roof and the generator runs from cooking oils. AMAZING!

The restaurant uses whole foods to make up some of the menu’s staples on site, including breads, pastries, pizza and yoghurt. The menu will be based on whats available locally and in season, encouraging people to become aware of the impact of food choices on the environment. To top it off Matt Stone, one of Australia’s best new talents will be serving it all up.

Besides its eco- friendly accomplishments, I would have to say my most  favourite part about the Greenhouse would have to be the humungous butterfly mural on the side of the shipping containers painted by the famous David Bromley. If only I could get him to come over my house to paint masterpieces on the walls.

The restaurant officially opened in early February and will be in Sydney until the end of March before continuing its tour to Milan for the International Furniture Fair and other European countries.

Become curious. You really need to check this one out before it leaves for its world tour. I know what I have planned for this weekend. Ciao!!
