For the last couple of years we have regularly been using outdoor fabrics in our balcony designs to add personality and softness to the space.
Soft furnishings help complete a balcony giving it an inviting comfortable feeling in the same way they do in a living room or bedroom. The design team have recently taken the time to put together our favourite fabrics to create a New Collection for the store.
With so many wonderful fabrics to choose from it can be a challenge to get just the right combination so here are some hints and tips on how to use outdoor fabrics on your balcony:
- The most obvious and simplest way to use fabric is in scatter cushions. A couple of cushions on a bench or casual chair will instantly add warmth, texture and colour to the balcony.
- Use a combination of patterns and colours in complimentary tones. We group our fabrics into pallettes including plain block colours, stripes and patterns to make it easy to visualise the combinations.
- Avoid the plain block colours for scatter cushions, instead select two, at most three, different patterns that work together and use one or two cushions per pattern. If you have a small space and only need 2-3 cushions then pick different patterns for each cushion. Some examples of combinations that work well together include:
Mokum – Pallette 1 : Stripe, Mimosa 042, Firewheel 005
Mokum – Pallette 5: Arabesque, Stripe, Firewheel 418
Urban Balcony- Pallette 7: Plain 034, Stripe, Floral
- Save the plain block colours for recovering chairs, lounges and sofa’s. Or if you are feeling ambitious and want a truly unique look consider covering the back cushion in a pattern and the base in a plain. We’ve done this with our latest store display using Hampton Square Chairs with a pattern back and plain base cushion.
