Simple solutions for small spaces

Keep it simple

Small spaces present big challenges.  To help create your perfect outdoor space on a small balcony we have put together a few pointers:

  • You balcony doesn’t stop at the balustrade.  Make the most of any available views to visually extend the boundaries of your balcony.  Use pots and plants to frame views and position furniture to allow you to enjoy those views.
  • When you have limited floor space use the vertical space and go up.  Column style pots have a small footprint but provide sufficient planting space for substantial plants.  Another great shape pot is the Euro Rectangle.  Again it’s footprint is minimal but it has additional height.
  • Don’t try to cram too much into the space.  Decide what you will mostly use your balcony for and provide for this.  If you regularly entertain then dedicate the space to outdoor dining.  Alternatively if you eat out a lot and would more likely use you balcony to chill out then don’t bother with a dining table, instead allow yourself the luxury of large comfortable outdoor lounge furniture.
  • Create the illusion of a larger space by continuing your interior style out onto the balcony.  Use similar materials, colours and finishes on your balcony as you have in the interior room that opens onto the balcony.  Outdoor cushions are excellent for introducing colour to you outdoor space.

And finally, the golden rule for small spaces….less is more!!
